Kunming - My Birthplace

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan is said to be the city of eternal spring.  It is in the center of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau 1,891 metres above sea level, with mild humidity, an average annual temperature of a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius, and flowers blooming in all four seasons.  The 300-square-km dianchi is Yunnan's largest alpine lake known as "Highland Bright Pearl" for its vast expanse of liquid silver and graceful scenery. Dianchi is surrounded by many scenic attractions, including West Hill Forest Park, and Grand View Pavilion, etc. Kunming's alluring highland scenery, bewitching karst landform, varied and exotic habitats, and places of historical interest have burned into my childhood memory.

My Favorite Food
  • Rice Noodles: xiaoguo mixian, douhua mixian, guoqiao mixian.
  • Guoqiao Mixian (Across The Bridge Rice Noodles) is one of the most famous dish in Yunan.  "Legend has it that guoqiao mixian came about when a young scholar retreated to another place to prepare for the imperial examination. His loving wife would travel and cross a nearby bridge to bring him his daily meal. Frequently, his meal would turned cold by the time it gets to him. One day, quite by chance, she discovered a bowl of chicken soup could keep warm with a layer of oil on top. From the on, she would serve the noodles and meat slices with the oil layer soup and the young scholar could enjoy a warm meal every day. When the scholar did well in the examination, he credited his success to his wife's noodles hence, this dish Across the Bridge Rice Noodles was popularized."

  • Steam Pot Chicken: qi guo ji.
  • "Steam pot chicken is Yunnan's version of 'hot-pot.' An opening is made at the centre of a ceramic pot, where steam comes out to cook the chicken. It is then served as a soup, usually with herbs such as aloe for beautifying, gou qi (Chinese wolfberry) to brighten the eyes, tian ma to relieve headache, or san qi (pseudo-ginseng) to promote blood circulation."

  • Wild Mushrooms And Vegetable: qingtou jun, ganba jun, jizong, fern
  • Pear of Treasure And Pearl: baozhu li

"Pear of Treasure And Pearl is a local fruit of Yunnan. There is a very interesting history of it.  It is said that at the end of the Song Dynasty, a monk called Bao Zhu (Pearl) came from the Chicken Foot Mountain of Binchuan to preach in Shanchan Town (the present -day Kunming). He brought with him the snow pear of Dali and grafted it with the pear in Chenggong. To commemorate the monk, people call the grafted pear "Pearl Pear". It is very juicy and thin in skin, containing the smell of honey. In the early years of the Yuan Dynasty, the emperor ate the pearl pear and ordered it to be offered as tribute every year. Later, he changed die name of the producing place to Chenggong, which means offering the tribute."

    My Favorite Places

    • Kunming holds many attractions such as Dianchi Lake, West hill, Grand View Pavilion, Qiongzhu Temple, Golden Hall, Yuantong Temple, and Cuihu Park. , Qiongzhu Temple, Golden Hall, Yuantong Temple, and Cuihu Park.

    The architecture in the temple

"Daguan Park (Grand View Pavilion), located 7 kilometers west of Kunming, was built in 1682 by a monk.  The park once served as a Guanyin (Avalokistesvara's) Temple. In 1690, large-scale construction was carried out with flowers, trees, ponds, causeways, pavilions and halls added to it.

The park provides a spectacular view across sparkling Dianchi Lake to the distant Western Hills. On the pavilion's lakeside facade hang two 5-meter-long tablets on which a couplet was written by Sun Ranweng, a famous poet of the Qing dynasty. Consisting of 180 Chinese characters, this couplet is reputed as the longest couplet throughout China. The upper scroll depicts the beautiful scenery of Kunming, while the lower scroll contains the author's comments on some important historical events in Yunnan."

    My Favorite Flowers.
    • Flowers: Michelia, Yunnan Camellia, Winter Sweet

My mother used to add Winter Sweet flowers to her lotion.  The smell was very good.

    My Favorite Wild Flowers

I liked many wild flowers especially flowers with a sweet or pleasant odor, such as Michelia Yunnanense(PiDaiXiang), Ginger Flower.

    My Favorite Activities:

    • I used to enjoy climbing hills with my parents and my sister.  We picked  pine cones, ferns, wild berries, wild flowers, and herbs.

    wild strawberries

There are many wild flowers on the hills, such as Hypericum hookerianum, Pieris taiwanensis, wild azaleas.

Because of the high altitude, the pine trees live on the hills are normally small.

My sister and I liked wild berries.  White berry has a taste of sweet butter.   In contrast to white berry, waxberry is very sour.

    Pieris taiwanensis

    • Going to markets with my grandma was one of the most memorable things.

Kunming is a good city to explore on foot. It has broad sidewalks lined with shady but well-maintained trees.  Although dominated by large avenues and steel highrises, the city has still a few pockets of vibrant back alleys lined with wooden buildings, street vendors and roadside masseurs, mostly around the intersection of Zhengyi Lu and Dongfeng Lu which constitues the heart of the shopping area.

QiuBei - a unforgetable small town

My mother used to work as a doctor in QiuBei Hospital.  When I was little, I went there to visit her few times.  I remember the hill with an old tower, the grand vegetable garden inside the hospital, the old public bathroom and the small autopsy house hiding in the corners of the garden, and the life-sized human shadows painted on the walls of the public bathroom...  I still remember that I liked to ask my mother to buy delicious rice cake with red bean paste on the street.  Above all, I remember the black dog called "LaoHe", who followed us all the way to the station the day before sun rise when we left QiuBei.
